Abstract

721,804. Hand-irons. HOOVER, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1953 [Jan. 16, 1952], No. 324/53. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXXVII] An electrically-heated iron for steam ironing as well as dry ironing including a valve 22, 23 for controlling the supply of water from a reservoir 18 to a boiler 12, has a thermostatic switch 30 for controlling the temperature of the soleplate when dry ironing, a thermostatic switch 50 for controlling the temperature of the sole-plate when steam ironing, and means interconnected with the valve for rendering the switch 30 operative and the switch 50 inoperative when the valve is closed, and vice versa when the valve is open. The two thermostatic switches 30, 50 are electrically connected to a two-way switch 70 which is connected by a link 72 and arm 73 to a valve actuator 24 which is pivoted at 25 and connected by a pin-and-slot connection to a valve stem 21. An over-centre spring 27 holds the valve in its closed position, from which it can be moved to the open position shown, in which the spring is just past its dead-centre position and the actuator is held by a spring detent 28. The steam ironing thermostat 50 has a fixed temperature setting, while the dry ironing thermostat 30 is adjustable by means of a control dial 46. The switches 30, 50, respectively include bimetallic strips 31, 51 carrying insulating buttons 37, 56 respectively passing through openings in contactcarrying blades 32, 52, co-operating with blades 33, 53 respectively. The blade 32 is engaged by an insulating button 39 of the control mechanism and has an extension 57 arranged to engage the corresponding blade 52 of the steam ironing thermostat when the dial 46 is moved to an off position so as to open the contacts of both switches. The button 39 projects through an opening in the blade 33 and is carried by an adjusting screw 38 threaded into a rigid arm 36. The dial 46 is connected to the screw 38 by a twisted strip connector 48 and is rotatably supported by a spring clip 47.
