Abstract
598,032. Heating liquids by electricity. THORNTON, W. H. B. Aug. 29, 1945, No. 22257. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electrically heated kettle comprises a heating element disposed in the base, a switch controlling the current supply to the element, and switch actuating mechanism including a movable component 24 upon which is mounted adjustable rolling means 26 for engagement with the supporting surface. The switch contacts are operated by a snap action tumbler 10 having ball and socket connection with a lever 15 pivoted on spindles 17 and 21, a pair of springs 22 extending between the latter and a rod 23. A link 29 connects the rod 21 to a pair of lever arms 24 pivoted on a spindle 25, and on the lower end of arms 24 is a roller 26 carried by a stud 27 adjustable in a slot 28. The weight of water in the kettle forces up the arms 24 and so closes the switch via the link 29. When the weight of water has fallen to a predetermined amount, the springs 22 move the lever 15 and its associated tumbler 10 to the open position shown in the Figure. A counter weight 33, whose position is adjustable on a bell crank 32, may be employed instead of or in addition to the springs 22. Specification 499,746, [Group XXXVII], is referred to.
