Abstract
681,424. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 27, 1948 [May 25, 1946], No. 6119/48. Class 38 (v) [Also in Groups VI and XI] A switch 34, Figs. 5 and 6, of an electrically heated pressure cooker (see Groups VI and XI) is controlled by a helical bimetallic element 42, Fig. 4. The bimetallic element 42 is connected at its lower end to a temperature-adjusting rod 44 and at its upper end to a U-shaped bracket 46 rotatable on the rod 44. A similar bracket 47, within the bracket 46 and rotatable on the rod 44, is biased against the bracket 46 by a torsion spring 48. The bracket 47 has a finger 49 for actuating the movable contact 36 of the switch. Upon heating, the helix 42 unwinds and moves the bracket 46 and therefore the bracket 47 to open the switch contacts 35, 36. When the switch arm 37 of the movable contact 36 engages a stop 39, the bracket 47 can no longer rotate but the bracket 46 may do so against the resistance of the spring 48 to avoid damaging the bimetallic element 42. The bimetallic element is mounted in the wall of the pressure cooker between heating elements extending down to a main heating area in the base of the cooker.
