Abstract
622,681. Thermal switches. REEVES ELECTRICAL & RADIO CO., Ltd., and REEVES, D. W. Oct. 22, 1947. No. 31386/46. [Class 38(v)] In an electric iron comprising a body portion housing a heating element D and a thermostatic control element P, switch contacts S are contained in a hollow handle C through hollow end portions of which pass respectively electrical connections between the switch contacts S and the element D, and a mechanical linkage N connecting contacts S to the control element P. Front and rear supports F and G are secured to a cover plate B, the rear support G carrying a terminal panel H to which are fixed supports K and k' which are connected to contact strips m' and M respectively. To the upper strip M is connected by an adjusting nut n<SP>2</SP> a rod N, the lower end of which is hooked to a bimetal strip P secured to the base A of the iron. The front support F carries a spindle j' provided with a cam J for adjusting the thermostat. The heating element D in the base of the iron causes the bimetal strip P to curl upwardly, whereby the upper contact strip M, which is spring-biased upwardly, rises and so opens the switch contacts S. To raise the operating temperature, cam J is rotated to raise both contact strips M and m<SP>1</SP> together, whereuppn bimetal strip P is forcibly curled upwardly, and hence a certain temperature must be attained before it can increase its degree of curling.
