An electric steam iron comprises a control lever 30 for turning a control shaft 25 whose lower end is connected to a temperature-adjusting member (Fig. 1, not shown), the lever 30 projecting through an opening 35 in a tubular front handle post 5, a control knob 57 for moving a valve stem 20 for a water control valve (not shown), the knob 57 being positioned in an opening 58 in the top wall 6 of the post 5, a yoke 50 having an arm 49 connected to the knob 57 and an arm 48 connected to the valve stem 20, spring means biasing the valve towards one position, and means 59 carried by the yoke adapted to engage a wall 60 of the tubular post for holding the valve in another position. The arm 48 has a boss 52 engaging a washer 44 on the stem 20, this washer being biased upwardly by two springs 45, 54 and the stem 20 being provided with retaining rings 46, 56 for the washer 44 and spring 54 respectively. The shaft 25 passes through an opening 51 in the arm 48 and engages a slot 34 in a flat circular boss portion 32 of the lever 30. The boss 32 is surrounded by a flange 33 and engages in an opening 40 in a temperature indicating plate 38. A slot 61 in the flange 33 co-operates with a lug 62 on the yoke 50 to prevent raising of the knob 57 to open the water valve unless the lever 30 is at the correct temperature setting for steam ironing and to lock the lever 30 at this setting when the valve is opened (Fig. 1, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the lower arm of the yoke is in the form of a spring arm and bears directly on the upper end of the valve stem.
