Abstract
774,660. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 18, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1954], No. 29666/55. Class 112. A work clamp is opened by a cam through a member which may be shifted to connect operatively the cam and the clamp opening mechanism, and the opening mechanism is then held by a latch in the open position. The drawings show in the at rest position, a machine for attaching buttons. The pivoted upper jaw 15 of the work clamp is coupled by a link 35 to an arm 36 of a rock shaft 37 provided with an arm 41 coupled by a link 42 to a push rod 38. The push rod is moved to the raised position by a cam 74 on the drive shaft 17 acting through a bell crank 77 on a shaft 80, and is held raised by a latch 88 engaging a notch in the rod. The machine is driven by a V-belt 43 engaging a pulley mounted on the drive shaft 17 and provided with a loose flange 45 the position of which is controlled by a swinging frame 46 pivoted at 47. To start an operating cycle the bellcrank 63 is operated by the pull-chain 65 to raise the slide-bar 61 and move the frame so that the flat spring 50 thereon moves the pulley flange 45 to make the drive effective. The latch 68 is released from the point 71 of cam 69 and moves to engage the collar 67 and hold the bar 61 in the raised position. The movement of the frame, to the left of the position shown in Fig. 3, causes the pivoted latch 88 to be disengaged from the notch in the push rod 38 by the finger 92 and moves the shaft 80 to disengage the bell crank 77 from the cam 74. Release of the push-rod 38 causes rotation of the rock shaft 37 and closure of the work clamp, which is held in work-gripping relation by a presser bar adjustably biased by a spring 33. At the end of the cycle the latch 68 is tripped by points 70, 71 on cam 69 and a stop-block 57 on a rod 53 resiliently centred on a lug 54 on the frame 46 engages a notch 58 on the hub of the fixed pulley flange 44 to bring the machine to rest with its various parts in the positions shown.
