Abstract

827,985. Gearing for stopping machinery. MITCHELL CO., A. J. Sept. 18, 1956 [Sept. 22, 1955], No. 28474/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group VII] In apparatus for feeding a succession of buttons to a button sewing machine and for controlling the operation of the latter a gear 90 is journalled on a cam-shaft 80 and meshes with a gear 88 fast with a driving-shaft 84. A hub 94, fixed to shaft 80, slidably carries a driving- pin 96 spring-biased into driving engagement with one of a series of holes in gear 90. A lever 100, biased towards shaft 80 by a spring 102, carries a cam 106 adapted to co-operate with the head of pin 92 to draw the latter out of engagement with gear 90, the head then engaging a stop 108 on lever 100. A lever 110 carries a similar cam 112 and stop 114 which are displaced 90 degrees from cam 106 and stop 108. Lever 110 is held by a latch 116, against the bias of a spring 118, in a position to engage the stud head. At the commencement of a cycle of operations, when lever 110 is in the unlatched position, lever 100 is drawn downwardly by a treadle and a rod 104 to release pin 96 for driving shaft 80. A cam 160 on shaft 80 then coacts with a roller 162 on a lever 120 to raise a rod 164 to engage the driving clutch of the sewing-machine, and a cam lug 166 on shaft 80 acts on an extension 168 of lever 110 to move the latter to the latched position. Shaft 80 is stopped by cam 112 after rotating through 90 degrees, roller 162 and extension 168 then being clear of cam 160 and lug 166 respectively. Upon completion of the sewing operation rod 164 is drawn downwards automatically, whereby a stud 124 on lever 120 is engaged with latch 116 to trip the latter for freeing pin 96 to drive shaft 80. If lever 100 has been released, shaft 80 will be stopped in its initial position by cam 106. If, however, lever 100 is held depressed, shaft 80 will be stopped once in each revolution by cam 112, and a succession of buttons will be fed and sewn on automatically.
