Abstract

767,929. Steam irons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 17, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 35201/53. Class 138 (2). An electric iron comprises a hollow front handle post 5 having a transverse slot 15 in its front wall adjacent its upper end, a control shaft 6 rotatably mounted in the post 5, a control cam 10 on the lower end of the shaft 6 below a water reservoir 4, a thermostat adjusting arm 11 engaged by the cam 10, which has dry and steam ironing sections, a cam disc 13 on the upper end of the shaft 6, a valve 24 for controlling flow of water from the reservoir 4 and having a stem 22 projecting up into the post 5 into engagement with the cam disc 13, and an operating arm 14 connected to the cam disc 13 and projecting out through the slot 15 for turning the cam 10 and cam disc 13 simultaneously, the cam disc having a portion 31 shaped to permit opening of the valve 24 when the steam ironing section of the cam 10 is in engagement with the arm 11 but holding the valve closed when the cam 10 is set for dry ironing. The valve stem 22 is biased upwardly by a spring 29, and is surrounded by a tube 19 having a filling opening 21. Specification 628,090 is referred to.
