Abstract

1,073,440. Steam irons. HOOVER Ltd. Sept. 8, 1965 [Sept. 17, 1964], No. 38390/65. Heading DIA. [Also in Division Fl] A flash boiler type steam iron having a spraying device with a manually operated pump has a single control member to operate the valve connecting the reservoir to the flash boiler and the pump. The valve comprises a vertical rod 8 and a valve body 6 mounted in the base of reservoir 5 which is filled through opening 17 when the iron is up-ended. Rod 8 is biassed upwardly to hold the valve open by a coil spring 19 engaging a projection 18 on rod 8 and a side extension of a casting 9 carrying a spray nozzle 16. Nozzle 16 is connected by passage 15 to the pump cylinder 12 in which slides piston 14 biassed upwardly by spring 13. Cylinder 12 is connected through a ball valve 11 and bore 10 with the lower part of reservoir 5. The control member 25 has a flat portion with a slot (30), a groove 31, a convex portion 26 which engages recesses 20, 21 in the handle and a rear portion undercut at (29A) to engage portion 24 of the handle. A leaf spring 33 which engages piston 14 and rod 8 co-operates with slot 30. Thus, when member 25 is placed with portion 26 engaging recess 20, rod 8 is held down to close the valve and the pump is not operable so that the iron operates as a dry iron. When portion 26 engages recess 21, rod 8 is released and portion (29A) is disengaged from portion 24 so that steam is produced and the pump may be operated. In modifications portion 24 may be omitted so that either spraying can take place in both positions or a projection (42) may be provided on the handle engaging a slot (41), Fig. 4 (not shown) in the control member to prevent pumping during steaming. The member 25 may be supported by a spring steel bracket (43) Fig. 7 (not shown). A modified control member (51) Fig. 9 (not shown) operates directly on piston (78) and carries a spring (67) which engages the valve rod (72).
