Abstract

776,857. Steam irons. HOOVER, Ltd. Sept. 1, 1955 [Sept. 2, 1954], No. 25174/55. Class 138 (2). In a steam iron, including a water reservoir 11 having an outlet 27 leading to a boiler 16 and having formed in it a reserve compartment 63 and a water head compartment 64, the lower portion of the latter communicates with the outlet and has a restricted plan area, so that a given volume of water in it will exert a greater head than the same volume would if the reservoir were not divided, and means are provided for causing water to flow from the reserve compartment to the head compartment when the iron is tilted from and then back to its operating position. A partition 60 dividing the reservoir into the two compartments 63, 64 slopes very slightly down towards the toe end of the reservoir where it is provided with an opening 71 connected by a tubular passage 70 to the outlet 27. The partition 60 also has openings 67, 68, each surrounded by an upstanding flange 69 forming a weir to prevent water in the compartment 64 from flowing back into the compartment 63. The outlet 27 is controlled by a needle valve 53 operated by a stem 51 and valve actuator 56.
