An electric iron comprises a body having walls defining a steam chamber 4 therein, a water reservoir 8 mounted on the rear portion of the body midway between its side edges, an orifice 14 for regulating flow of water from the reservoir to the steam chamber, and a handle 33 bifurcated at its rear end to provide legs which extend down on opposite sides of the reservoir and are attached to the rear end of the body. The legs are pivotally connected to the body as seen in Fig. 2 (not shown) so that the handle may be folded down on to the body for travelling purposes. The handle is held in the ironing position by means of a spring latch plate 37 having pockets 41 adapted to be engaged by bosses 42 on the handle 33. The handle may be pivoted above its ironing position in order to expose a filling spout 19 for the reservoir 8. The reservoir is enclosed by a housing 24, 25 containing electric wiring 30 and forming with the rear end 21 of the body a heel rest for the iron.
