Abstract
740,175. Hand-irons. HOOVER, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1953 [Sept. 23, 1952], No. 26190/53. Class 138 (2). In a steam iron comprising a reservoir 35 for supplying water to a flash boiler 13 carried by or formed in its sole plate 10, a filling tube 79 opens into the reservoir at a level below the top of the latter, so as to leave an air pocket in the upper part of the reservoir when filled through the filling tube, and a venting passage controlled by a venting valve 92 leads from the top of the reservoir for venting the air from the air pocket at will. The venting valve 92 controls ports 91 in a valve tube 48 and is connected to a valve 61 controlling the flow of water from the reservoir to the boiler. The valves 61, 92 are carried by a stem 60 operated by an actuator 65. In use, when the reservoir is filled through the tube 79 with the valves 61, 92 closed, an air pocket is formed in the top of the reservoir 35 (Fig. 1, not shown). Water is poured in nearly up to the filling opening 88, after which the venting valve 92 is opened to allow the air to escape and the water from the filling tube to flow into the reservoir.
