Abstract
667,017. Ironing. MATTHEWS, E. F. (Glover, Inc., B.). Feb. 7, 1950, No. 3172/50. Class 138 (ii). A puff iron assembly comprises a hollow head 10 divided into two compartments 11, 12, one of which is provided with discharge holes 13, a steam line communicating with one compartment and an air line communicating with the other, and valves controlling the lines so that either steam or air may be discharged from the head. Steam is supplied to the lower compartment 12 through pipes 39 and 14, and may be admitted to the upper compartment 11 by opening a valve communicating therewith. This valve comprises a valve seat 17 received in a partition 10a in the head and centrally bored at 18 and 18a. The bore 18a communicates with the compartment 11 through a plurality of radial holes 18b. The valve is closed by a member 20 carrying a, gasket 21. which is pressed against a valve seat 17a, by a compression spring 24. The valve is operated by a stem 19 which is connected to an arm 29 pivoted at 28 and connected by a link 30 to a handle or pedal. The stem 19 and valve-member 20 are hollow for the supply of air to the upper conpartment, the lower end of stem' 19 being connected by an elbow 32 and flexible hose 33 to an air valve 34. This valve is of the spring- actuated type opened by raising a valve pin 34a by means of an arm 36, link 37 and a manually operated lever or pedal. The air in the hollow stem 19 is heated by steam in the pipe 14 surrounding it and also by conduction from the steam pipe 39 through a thin-walled casing 40 packed with shavings 41 of non-corrosive metal. A heat-insulating plastic protector tube 25 surrounds the pipe 14.
