A domestic iron comprises a water reservoir inside a housing 2 affixed to a sole plate 1 and accommodating heating means, the housing carrying a pump 10 for generating a store of compressed air in the reservoir, and an escape conduit 18 for the water communicating with means for spraying water on to the work close to the iron. The spray means may comprise a plurality of restricted orifices 13 in pipes 14, and 17, 17a in pipes 16. A valve 21 controls the supply of water through pipes 27 to the pipes 14, and through pipes 33 to the pipes 16. The valve 21 is rotatable under the control of a knob located near the front end of the handle and has a T-shaped passageway enabling the pipes 27, 33 to be selectively or both connected to the reservoir. The valve 21 has similar passages for air, enabling compressed air to be supplied from the reservoir to air pressure supply tubes (as 29) extending alongside the tubes 14, 16 and communicating therewith through restricted orifices to assist in spraying the water through the orifices 13, 17, 17a. In a modification the orificed tubes are replaced by a rose such as that illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) which may be embodied in the nose or base of the sole plate.
