An electric iron comprising a sole plate 1, steam ports in the sole plate, a steam chamber 11, and a reservoir 23, has a pipe 20 for supplying water from the reservoir to the steam chamber the outer end 22 of this pipe being disposed at the side of the iron and a sufficient distance forwardly of the rear end of the iron for the reservoir not to interfere with the supporting of the iron on its heel rest when not in use. In one example, Fig. 2, the reservoir 23 comprises a self-supporting bulb of flexible material such as rubber, having a neck 24 which is adapted to be detachably connected to pipe end 22. A sleeve 28 fixed in the neck 24 has a threaded end 29 adapted to be screwed over a threaded nipple 27 on a cap 25 threaded over pipe end 22. For filling purposes the neck 24 is unscrewed from the nipple 27 and inserted in water, the bulb 23 being then squeezed and released, a ball valve 31 being provided to retain the water in the bulb 23. The nipple 27 has an orifice 26 and a tubular extension 32 which unseats the ball valve 31 when the reservoir 23 is in position on the iron. Stop means is provided to ensure that an air vent in the bulb 23 faces forwardly when the bulb 23 is in its operative position on the iron to prevent leakage of water from the bulb when the iron is up-ended. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the reservoir is made of non-flexible material, e.g. metal, and provided with a filling opening at the top and a modified valve arrangement at the bottom.
