Abstract
587,802. Hand irons. WILKINSON, G. H. Jan. 3, 1945, No. 212. [Class 138 (ii)] An electrically-heated steaming-iron has a flash generating chamber in the sole plate 1, whence the steam passes to outlets in the ironing face by way of one or more superheating chambers which are disposed closer to the heating element 4, e.g., at a higher level, than the generating chamber. As shown, the generating chamber comprises bores 7 extending along either side of the sole plate and communicating at their forward ends, each with a diagonal bore 18 at a higher level and provided with steaming orifices. The bores 7 also communicate with a cross bore 17, also at the higher level, and supplying orifices midway of the length of the iron. Water is supplied to the bores 7 from a reservoir 5 under the control of a needle valve 10 operated through a flexible cable 12 by a press button 15 on the handle. The pipe connection 8 from the reservoir 5 to the bores 7 has branches 8a each with a ball valve which closes to cut off the water supply if the steam pressure becomes excessive. Tubes may be recessed or otherwise located in the sole plate in place of the bores.
