Abstract

876,851. Carrying conductors through partitions. POSTMASTER-GENERAL. Nov. 27, 1957 [Oct. 23, 1956], No. 32332/56. Class 36. A cable, e.g. a coaxial cable, is passed through an aperture in a wall, e.g. the wall of a pressure vessel, by a gland arrangement comprising an insulating sheath on at least that part of the cable passing through the gland, the sheath being screw-threaded and a sleeve 6 being screwed on to it, the sleeve abutting a flange 3 moulded on to the sheath and the flange being compressed against a shoulder, through which the aperture passes, by means such as a gland nut 8 which engages with a threaded boss 5 projecting from the wall and, in this instance, forming the shoulder. Stressraiser rings 9 may be formed on the boss face or on the flange. A modification wherein the boss has a plurality of apertures and a plurality of cables with a common moulded flange pass therethrough, is described (Fig. 3, not shown). If both sides of the wall are subjected to equal pressure the shoulder may be formed within the wall thickness, the flange being formed with an extension fin around each edge, these fins being compressed against the sides of the shoulder by gland nuts screwed into the aperture from each side. The gland nuts may be pierced to allow fluid pressure to be communicated to each face of the flange.
