Abstract

780,993. Mechanical couplings for cable sheathing. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd. Nov. 22, 1955 [Nov. 22, 1954], No. 33786/54. Class 38 (1). A sealing gland between a cable 2 and a casing 3 consists of a gland body 1 of resilient material compressed between plates 4, 5 which are drawn together by bolts 6, the gland body being united with one of the plates, e.g. by vulcanizing or an adhesive, so that when it is desired to break the seal, the gland body can be stretched by separating the plates. One method of doing this is shown in Fig. 3. The body 1 is attached to plate 5 and to separate the plates, bolts 6 are unscrewed until they abut plate 5, bolts 9 loosely carried by a jig plate 8 then being screwed into apertures in plate 4 so as to draw the jig plate towards bolts 6 and use them as plungers to force plate 5 and body 1 away from plate 4. Alternatively the holes in plate 4 for bolts 6 may be larger than these bolts and tapped so that after removal of bolts 6, further bolts may be screwed into plate 4 and through the body 1 to abut plate 5 and force it away from plate 4. In another arrangement plate 4 may be drawn away from plate 5 by a jig plate bearing against the end of casing 3.
