870,154. Valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 26, 1959 [March 27, 1958], No. 9869/58. Class 135. A device controlling fluid flow through it in opposite directions has a chamber 1 with two ports 3, 4, an operating member 38 with a valve 13 seating at 3, and a part 7 at port 3 which on initial opening of the valve forms a space 30 with the operating member and has an opening 29 for the passage of fluid from 4 to 3 which is smaller than the flow passage for fluid from 3 to 4 when the operating member is moved to an extreme position, the valve initially opening for flow from 4 to 3 by the application at 3 of a pressure smaller than the pressure at 4. The device is used in a gas regenerator system. With resilient valve 13 closed, a sliding abutment 39 loaded by spring 23 contacts a guide 21 and tends to open the valve. On the application of the pressure at 3 the spring opens the valve, the abutment 39 is held by stem 15 away from guide 21 and fluid flows from high pressure port 4 to low pressure port 3 at a rate determined by opening 29 which may be in member 38, around the edge of member 38 or through wall 7. On decrease of pressure at 3 the flow closes the valve. On the application of a higher pressure at 3 than at 4, the member 38 is lifted against its weight to open a larger flow passage between it and wall 7 for flow from 3 to 4. In an alternative embodiment, the initial opening is limited by a stop on stem 15 engaging guide 21 and opening 29 is in a weight loaded valve seating on member 38 which is provided with a larger opening, the valve being lifted for flow from 3 to 4. The valve may be solid, with the opening 29 in member 38 but outside the periphery of the valve. In a further embodiment the shapes of members 7, 38 are interchanged. The member 7 may be formed by the wall of chamber 1. Specification 842,577 is referred to.
