Abstract

829,973. Valves. GARRETT CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 4, 1956], No. 37838/57. Class 135. A valve comprises a tapered cup-shaped resilient sealing element secured at its centre to a closure member movable towards a seat to close it, the edges of the element being free to flex when it bears on the seat. The cup-shaped sealing element 32 is secured at its centre to the end of a piston 29 spring-loaded at 26 through a sleeve 39 which compresses at 30 the seals 24, 25 between the piston and the cylinder 20 in which it slides, which cylinder is supported in a conduit by veins 19. Since the piston area is greater than the area of the seat 17, inlet pressure at 10 acting by a restriction 36 in the end of the piston will close the valve against inlet pressure. To open the valve the pressure in the cylinder is bled off through the valve 37. In an alternative embodiment the restriction 36 is closed and the bleed valve conduit 38 is controlled by a double-acting valve or two solenoid valves one allowing pressure to flow into the cylinder and the other controlling exhaust from the cylinder. The sealing element 32 is of flexible stainless steel, the included angle of the sealing element being slightly greater than the forward end of the closure piston 29.
