Abstract

868,714. Knitting-machines. COTTON Ltd., WILLIAM. Sept. 24, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956; May 29, 1957], Nos. 29844/56 and 16998/57. Class 74 (2). The carrier bars 16 of a straight-bar machine are driven selectively from a reciprocating rack 24 on a slide 17, driven from the usual draw cam mechanism, by epicyclic gear trains 31. Each gear train is mounted on a shaft 25 which is geared to a corresponding carrier bar and which also freely supports a gear 30 in engagement with the rack 24. The gear 30 is coupled to a sun-gear of the train which comprises two series of planet gears coupled by a ring gear and which drive a further sun-gear coupled to the shaft 25. The two series of planet gears are carried by separate end discs or cages which, when a particular carrier bar is to be driven, are braked by a band-brake or by shoe-brakes to prevent rotation of the cages and thereby effect transmission of the drive through the epicyclic gear train to the carrier bar. When the carrier bars engage their stops at the end of each traverse the brakes permit frictional slippage to occur between them and the cages.
