Abstract

628,877. Knitting- machines. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and KENT, A. W. June 20, 1946, No. 18562. [Class 74 (ii)] [Also in Group IX] A cylinder and dial machine having a number of yarn feeding positions is provided with a yarn feeding device for each position and toothed change-speed gearing for each device driven from a common gear. As described, each device is driven from the drive for the dial which rotates a pinion 8 carrying a series of crown wheels 9 .... 12. A pinion 6 is slidably keyed on a shaft 5, supporting one of the furnishing members 1, and engages any one of the gear wheels 9 . . . 12 to effect a change in the speed of rotation of the shaft. The furnishing members 1, 2 may be intermeshing tapered gear wheels, one of which is mounted on a bracket 15 adapted to be swung to move the wheel out of mesh with the other. A swing- ing damper 28, provided with an eye 3 and a dropper 4, is mounted above the wheels 1, 2 and a second dropper 25 is pivoted below the wheels. The second dropper engages a strut 27 maintaining a lever 20 pivoted on the shaft 21 of the wheel 2 in a raised position. A ratchet wheel 23 is mounted to rotate with the wheel 1. The yarn is guided by the eye 3 between the wheels 1, 2 to the eye of the second dropper 25 from which it passes to the first dropper 4 and to the machine. As the tension of the yarn varies the dropper 4 is moved accordingly and rotates the damper 28 to vary the position of the yarn between the wheels. If a yarn breaks between the wheels and the machine, the dropper 25 drops to release strut 27, permitting the lever 20 to engage the rotating ratchet 23 so that the wheels are forced apart to release the yarn and to allow a stop motion engageable with the yarn above the wheels to operate and stop the machine.
