Abstract

A multi-section straight bar full fashioned knitting machine has at least two parallel cam shafts instead of one, none controlled by another, which are rotatable at a constant speed ratio, are common to all sections of the machine, and bear each some of the cams which have been or normally would be mounted on a single shaft, one bearing at least the cams associated with loop forming and another bearing at least the cams associated with the draw motions. Shaft 10 carries all the cams controlling loop formation and those associated with the narrowing mechanism to ensure the preservation of accurate timing between them, and may be shoggable; and the shaft 13 carries, inter alia, the draw cam 28. The cam shafts are driven from a motor 15 through a pinion 18, intermediate gears 21, 22, 23 rotating together on a stub shaft 19 and gears 24, 25. A friction clutch 31 may be interposed between gear 21 and gears 22, 23. One revolution of one cam shaft corresponds to a whole number of revolutions of the other shaft.
