The carrier bars 1, 2, 3 of a straight-bar machine are provided with projections 10, 11, 12 which are selectively engaged by stops 22, 23 driven by the friction box 9 mounted on the bar 8. The stops 22, 23 are pivoted into or out of engagement with the projections 10. 11. 12 to effect the drive of the bars 1, 2, 3 by being mounted on sleeves and controlled by shafts 13, 14 pneumatically operated to bring the stops into engagement with the projections.
