Abstract
863,470. Matching impedances. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. July 26, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 23826/57. Class 40(8) A coaxial line is provided with a gas-tight window comprising a cylindrical dielectric member disposed with its axis parallel to the conductors of the line. As shown, the window 14, made e.g. of a ceramic, is spaced from the inner and outer conductors 9, 17 of the line and is secured by metallizing to a frame consisting of upper and lower annular members 13, 15 made of "Kovar" (Registered Trade Mark). The upper frame member is affixed to a copper flange 12 on the inner conductor 9 whilst the lower frame member is carried by a yieldable apertured cup member 16 brazed to a hollow block 18 forming part of the outer conductor. The block also forms part of the input coupling to a resonant cavity 1 and is provided with an oval bore 21 communicating with the interior of the cavity. An extension of the inner conductor 9 passes through the oval bore and terminates in an input loop 23. A capacitive conductive slug 24 compensates the inductive effect of the loop, the two elements forming a resonant circuit tuned to a frequency such that the coupling to the cavity increases with frequency. The capacitive reactance of the window 14 is compensated by increasing the internal diameter of the outer conductor and decreasing the diameter of the inner conductor in the vicinity of the window assembly.
