Abstract
581,976. Wave guides; superheterodyne receivers. CORK, E. C., MANIFOLD, M. BOWMAN-, GALE, F. H., and BLYTHEN, R. Sept. 1, 1942, No. 12351. [Class 40 (v)] An arrangement for mixing high-frequency oscillations, for example in superheterodyne reception of waves transmitted through wave guides, comprises a mixing element supported in a tubular conductor having inner conductors for feeding the respective oscillations to opposite ends of the mixing element, which may be a crystal. The waves arriving on a wave guide 1 are picked up by a disc 6 on a hollow rod 7 telescopically associated with an inner rod 3 to which one terminal of the crystal 2 is connected. The local oscillation source feeds a concentric line 15, 20, the inner member 15 of which is coupled by a capacity 17, 18 to the opposite terminal of the crystal 2. The resultant oscillations are taken off by a line 10 connected to the rod 3 and passing through a piston tuner 24, 11. The slidable piston 24 is separated by dielectric 23 from the cylinder 11 to form a capacity large enough to shunt the input waves and allow only the resultant of difference frequency to pass outwards along the line 11. A further piston tuner 13, with a short-circuiting piston 22 is provided for impedance matching. The crystal is enclosed by a tubular conductor 9, 16 integral with the tuning cylinders, the whole being slidable on the outer conductors 4, 20 of the wave feeders, to permit adjustment of the capacity 17, 18. Access to the crystal is obtained by a removable plate covering the opening 21.
