Abstract

594,622. Electric resonators. ALDER. L. S. B., SLAFFER, M., MITCHELL, F. A., and BUCKINGHAM, J. June 21, 1945, No. 15909. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] An aerial is coupled to the preselector stage of a radio receiver through a coaxial resonator 1,2, tapped at 18, 23 near the short-circuited and grounded end 3 so as to provide high selectivity even with grounded-grid valves at very highfrequencies, and tuned by means of a sleeve 5 which slides on the inner conductor 2 and is of larger diameter so as to increase the effective length of the line, contact fingers 7 being provided. The sleeve 5 is positioned by insulating spacers 8 and is moved axially by means of a rod 11 co-operating with a pinion 10 and rack, Fig. 2 (not shown), and clamped in position. A scale and pointer indicate the frequency. The lead 18 may be taken to a point on the shortcircuiting plate 3, Fig. 3A (not shown). Two such resonators may be connected in tandem, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the tuning-rods 11 being connected to a rack-operated yoke by screws by means of which the resonators can be aligned at the lower working frequencies. Each outer conductor 1 carries in this case a resilient strip which is in capacitive relation with the sleeve 5 and can be adjusted for effecting alignment at the higher working frequencies,
