Abstract
575,739. Wave guides. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., BROWN, L. W., and NICOLL, J. H. March 30, 1944, No. 5939. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A wave guide has its impedance changed by forming in the guide a sudden contraction in its cross-section by. means of a diaphragm or the equivalent, and providing two rods or probes of insulating material extending into the guide in the vicinity of the contraction and fixed in location longitudinally of the guide. Figs. 3 and 4 show respectively side and end views of a rectangular guide 1 in which the contraction 6 is in the form of projections 8 from opposite sides of the guide. The probes comprise rods 3, 4 of low-loss insulating material such as quartz extending adjustably into the guide. The probes may be arranged on the same side of the diaphragm or may be in the plane of the diaphragm. There may be two diaphragms. The diaphragms act as shunt inductance and the probes as shunt capacitance. The combination may be used as a variable matching impedance.
