Abstract

612,410. Impedance transformers. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. April 25, 1944, No. 7746. Convention date, April 8, 1943. [Class 40 (viii)] [Also in Group XL (c)] An impedance transformer for a wave-guide comprises an adjustable length of concentric transmission line connected in shunt with the wave-guide and having the inner conductor adjustably insertable within the wave-guide, whereby an impedance connected at one end of the wave-guide may be transformed to a different value by adjusting the length of the concentric line and the amount of the inner conductor insertion. Fig. 1 shows an impedance transformer connected in a section of rectangular wave-guide 11 and comprising a tubular conductor 13 closed by a plug 14. A conducting rod 16 has screw-threaded engagement with plug 14 so as to be adjustably extensible into wave-guide 11. A conducting piston 18 in sliding contact with tube 13 and rod 16 is adjustable by means of a member 19 to vary the effective length of the concentric line 13, 16. These two independent adjustments enable the amplitude and phase of the reflected wave to be varied so as to give perfect impedance matching for a source and a load connected to guide 11 on opposite sides of tube 13. In Fig. 2, the impedance transformer 12 is used to transfer energy from guide 22 to guide 23 through a circular guide 24<1> formed with a rotatable joint 28. Circular guide 24<1> is made equal to one wavelength of the T.M. mode excited in it, and the joint is provided .with quarter-wave flanges to form a wave trap. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), central conductor 16 of the impedance transformer passes right through the connecting conductor which thus consists of a concentric line. Specification 612,406, [Group XL (c)], is referred to.
