Abstract

650,615. Wave-guides; impedance transformers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1947, No. 23047. [Class 40 (viii)] A length of waveguide of rectangular cross-section is joined to a load impedance through a transformer section of wave-guide of different crosssectional dimensions to the first length, these dimensions being so chosen as to match the impedance of the load to the characteristic impedance of the wave-guide. The calculation of the required dimensions is discussed in connection with the transmission of H 10 waves and the transforming section is a one quarter wavelength. In addition to the normal transforming action of a quarter wavelength section there are two transformer effects due to the change in the longer dimension of the crosssection of the guides at each end of the transformer. and four shunt reactances produced by the changes of each dimension at each end. The latter reactances can, however, be ignored if the characteristic impedance of the waveguide differs widely from that of the load. In the construction a length of guide 1 is connected to a load 2 through a transformer 3. By effecting changes in the short " b dimension and maintaining the long " a " dimension unaltered, the transformer effect due to changes in the " a " dimension is eliminated.
