Abstract

628,928. High-frequency transmission lines. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21715. Convention date, July 30, 1943. [Class 40 (viii)] An energy-absorbing termination for a highfrequency transmission line comprises a portion of line having material for absorbing energy distributed along its length and having its cross-section changed continuously or in steps so that the characteristic impedance decreases from the value at the input end to near zero at the opposite end. In the example shown of a coaxial construction the inner conductor 13 includes resistive material to absorb energy and the outer conductor 14 tapers in an exponential curve. For ease in manufacture the curve may be approximated by successive short cylindrical sections of diminishing diameter. If the length of these sections is only of the order of one eighth of the operating wavelength no substantial difference appears in the operation of this modification. Alternatively the outer conductor may be a cylinder and embody resistive material while the inner conductor expands in cross-section to the dead end.
