Abstract
579,073. Coaxial line and wave guide attenuators. COLLARD, J. Nov. 21, 1942, No. 16507.. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] An attenuator for high frequencies is in the form of a transmission line or wave guide including a high-resistance portion. For example, a wave guide may include a portion coated with resistance material. The device described in detail is a coaxial transmission line with a portion 11c of the inner conductor formed of resistance material tapped at 10 decibel intervals by metal rings which co-operate with spring fingers formed on a sleeve 16 which is preferably. #/2 in length and makes connection at its other end with a normal portion 11a of the inner conductor. The sleeve is carried by means of polystyrene insulation by a portion 12c of outer conductor which telescopes in a portion 12a. The portion 12c is carried by a block which is moved by a rack and pinion and has an extension surrounding the outer conductor 12b. Impedance-matching branch lines adjustable by pistons P1, P2 may be associated with the attenuator. These may be replaced by small screws threaded in the outer conductor and having capacity to the inner conductor of the attenuating line. The Specification indicates how the dimensions of the device are to be calculated.
