Abstract

918,419. Impedance networks. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 26, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. 17012/58. Class 40 (8). A transmission line coupling arrangement has n coupling sections between the two transmission lines, wherein the characteristic impedance of each coupling section, if the coupling sections are in series connection with the two transmission lines, or the characteristic admittance thereof, if in shunt connection, is approximately proportional to sin (2r-1) #/2n, where r is the number of the coupling section counted from one end of the arrangement, allowance being made for junction discontinuities. Each coupling section has uniform characteristic impedance along its length and the electrical distance along each of the two transmission lines between the effective junction with each coupling section and the effective junction with each adjacent coupling section and the electrical lengths of the coupling sections are all approximately the same-a quarter wavelenth at the operating frequency. The arrangement is applicable to hollow waveguides or coaxial lines. In the arrangement shown, the dimensions b 1 b 2 , b 3 , b 4 , b 5 of the coupling sections 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 in series connection between the waveguides 1 and 2 are proportional to # sin (2r - 1) -. The division of power between 10 the waveguides 1 and 2 can be altered by multiplying the dimensions b 1 to b 5 by a common factor. A particular example is described for use in the frequency range from 1800 to 2200 megacycles per sec. and in which the voltage standing wave ratio in each of the guides 1 and 2 due to the coupling arrangement under matched termination conditions does not exceed 1.05. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 all the coupling sections 5 to 9 have the same physical length L, but the end sections may be slightly longer so as to give them the desired electrical length when allowance is made for discontinuity effects. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the coupling sections 5-9 open into the broad walls of the guides 1 and 2 and are in series therewith. Alternatively the coupling sections can open into the narrow walls of the guides and be in shunt therewith, the mathematical relation then referring to characteristic admittances of the coupling sections. Comparison with a " binomial " arrangement is discussed.
