Abstract

586,122. Tuning pistons. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., FREMLIN, J. H., and JAQUES, T. A. J. Oct. 2, 1942, No. 13895. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A piston for tuning a resonator of the waveguide or coaxial conductor type comprises a number of sections which, with the tube in which it moves, form transmission line elements which are alternately of high and low characteristic impedance and so transmit one or more ranges of wavelengths and reflect another range. As shown in Fig. 1, the piston comprises portions 3 of a diameter approaching that of the tube alternating with portions 4 of small diameter fitted with insulating discs of polystyrene to locate the piston on the tube. The piston shaft may be hollow to provide a conduit for a conductor 5 looped at, 6 for drawing energy from the resonator. In a modification, Fig. 4, for tuning a velocity-modulation tube similar to that described in Specification 537,490, the piston comprises alternate members of conducting and insulating material. The insulating members in both arrangements may be of the form shown in Fig. 3. Other dispositions of insulating material for locating the piston in the tube are referred to. Design formulµ are given in the Specification. Resonators tuned by such pistons may be used in wave meters and harmonic generators. Specifications 579,414 and 581,883 also are referred to.
