Abstract

581,173. Resonator circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, E. O. Aug. 27, 1942, No. 12109. [Classes 39 (i), 40 (iii), and 40 (v)] Two coil-less resonators resonant at the same frequency are coupled together inductively at current anti-nodal points and are designed so that the equivalent series impedances at the coupling point have the same ratio of reactance to resistance so as to give a band-pass effect. In one of the applications described, Fig. 2, one of the resonators 1, 2 forms part of a velocity modulation tube of the kind described in Specification 537,490 for generating oscillations having wave lengths less than 20 cms. and the other 8, 9 terminates in a conical autenna, each being of constant characteristic impedance and a quarter wave-length long, the coupling being by means of radial portions 23, 34 as shown in Fig. 3. With this arrangement, which presents a constant impedance over the pass-band to the energy-extracting gap of the tube, the generated frequency can be varied simply by varying the accelerating voltage without modifying the dimensions of the resonator and the device can thus be used in an altimeter system of the reflection type operating on the known frequency-sweep principle. The invention may also be employed on the receiving circuit of such a system. In one such arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), a conical aerial is coupled to a length of coaxial line having a piezo-electric crystal connected at a current antinode. Where a straight aerial is used, the line coupled to it is stepped as shown in Fig. 6 and dimensioned in accordance with Z Z1 the relation -=- where these terms are the Z<1> Z1<SP>1> characteristic impedances of the portions indicated on the drawing.
