Abstract

676,947. High-frequency transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 26,1951 [May 23, 1950], No. 4645/51. Class 40 (viii). A single line conductor 1 used for microwave propagation by means of an electromagnetic field formed thereabout is coupled to a hollow conductor 3 by being extended therein. The end portion of the conductor 3 may be caused to decrease progressively in conductance towards its end to improve matching. This may be effected as shown by tapering the wall of conductor 3, or alternatively the conductivity of the conductor may be varied, for example by spraying resistance material thereon. Conductor 3 may be a wave-guide or, as shown, it may form the outer of a coaxial line, the inner of which is a continuation of conductor 1. The latter is generally covered with insulation to maintain its surrounding field within desired limits and, as shown, this insulation may include beads 10, 11, 12, and 13. By altering the spacing of the beads or otherwise varying the insulation the insulation per unit length may be arranged to decrease progressively in each direction along conductor 1 from the point of entry at bead 10 into conductor 3. This effects a desirable contraction of the field about conductor 1 at its point of entry into conductor 3.
