Abstract

683,359. High-frequency transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 9, 1951 [April 1, 1950], No. 3195/51. Class 40 (viii). In a micro-wave transmission system in which energy is propagated by waves closely surrounding a single insulated conductor 1, the latter is held in position by dielectric means extending from a support for a sufficient distance to maintain the latter outside the concentrated magnetic field around the conductor 1. The construction in Fig. 1 shows an end support 2 and an intermediate support 3 for conductor 1. The support 2 has a flared end 4 and a matching stub 5 at the other end and has an input or output wave-guide 12 coupled thereto. Dielectric means 8 support the conductor 1 within the horn. The tapering of the ends of means 8 and the flaring of end 4 prevent undue perturbation of the wave energy passing the support. The middle support 3 is flared at each end and contains tapered dielectric means 20. In an alternative construction the passage through the dielectric means may be flared out at the ends to produce a similar effect to the tapering. In a modification, the dielectric means comprise threads 45 looped around conductor 1 and secured to a support-ring 43 surrounding the conductor. Further a channel may be formed for conductor 1 in a dielectric slab 59 which is provided with an aperture so that it can be hung on a hook. In the construction shown the channel is curved.
