Abstract

682,817. Wave-guides. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 10, 1951 [Aug. 17, 1950], No. 20426/50. Class 40 (viii). A supporting arrangement for a surface wave transmission line comprises a tubular member A having open ends of cross-section sufficient to accept the major part of the surface wave field, and means for centring the line G within the tubular member. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the tubular member is of uniform crosssection and the centring means consists of a dielectric washer B having a thickness of a half wavelength in the material of the washer. Alternatively two thin dielectric washers can be used spaced apart one quarter wavelength in air. In another form, shown in Fig. 3, the tubular member has conical ends that transform the surface waves into a coaxial mode along a centre section C. Matching diaphragms E may be placed at the ends of the coaxial section. The conductor G may be supported in the coaxial section by a stub S. The section C may be made flexible so that the end washers may be maintained normal to the conductor G even if the conductor sags on each side of the support.
