Abstract
859,951. Launching and receiving surface waves. SURFACE CONDUCTION Inc. July 5, 1957 [July 13, 1956], No. 21333/57. Class 40(8). Axially symmetrical T.M. surface waves are received or transmitted along an elongated conductor or from an electromagnetic cavity which is wave intransmissive at one end and wave transmissive at the other, and which is coupled at the former end to one end of said conductor extending coaxially into said cavity; means being provided to set up an oscillating electromagnetic field in said cavity. An end of surface conductor 3 forms the central conductor 2 of coaxial cavity 1 which has a cylindrical section 13 and side walls 6 and 4, the latter being of wire mesh. Dimensions L and D are suitably chosen and oscillations are set up in the cavity between walls 4 and 6 by loop 7 and some of the wave energy passes wall 4 and is propagated along line 3; the diameter of the surface wave field being substantially equal to D. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the cavity is not resonant and has only one end wall which is symmetrically slotted and provides means for coupling a coaxial line to the cavity.
