Abstract

1,112,234. Molecular beams. HEWLETTPACKARD CO. 27 July, 1965 [27 July, 1964; 18 Aug., 1964], No. 32074/65. Heading G6P. In an atomic beam tube, for use in a frequency standard as described in Specification 1,067,328, cylindrical cavity resonators are employed to effect resonance of the beam particles. The circular electric mode oscillation generated in the resonators is of the type TE m, n, x, the tangential component of the electric field being zero. The cavities, providing beam-field interaction regions, are formed at the extremities of a silver coated, quartz, cylinder and are coupled together by an inner coaxial resonant transmission line, through which the beam is directed. Temperature compensation of the resonant frequency is provided by flexibly mounted end holes and attenuation is effected by annular recesses at the ends of the cylinder. Energy is injected into the structure from a rectangular waveguide mounted centrally on the outer surface of the quartz cylinder, through a rectangular iris. A C-field solenoid surrounds the cavities.
