Abstract
642,418. High-frequency attenuators. POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE OF BROOKLYN. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 21848. Convention date, June 21, 1945. [Class 40 (viii)] A variable attenuator comprises a transmission conductor 2 having an attenuator section of relatively high resistance and a conductive sleeve surrounding the conductor and slidable thereon to shunt a variable portion of the attenuator section. In the arrangement shown, the attenuator section consists of an insulating support on which a metallic film is deposited. This film may be divided into sections. Section d-e is thin and comprises the attenuating portion. Section b-c is thicker and forms an impedance transformer section to match the attenuator to the line. Sections a-b and c-d are much thicker and act merely as conductors on which the sleeve may slide. The latter consists of a metal section 4 and an insulating section 5 which carries a film to form a matching section equivalent to b-c. The sleeve is broad enough to span the attenuator section and shunt it completely. It is moved by an arm 6 connected to a rack 7 engaging with a hand-operated gear-wheel 9. By placing the attenuator at a right-angle bend in a coaxial line the sleeve may project out of the end of its length of line and be adjusted without the necessity for arm 6 passing through the outer conductor.
