Abstract

580,810. Impedance transformers. COLLARD, J. Oct. 1, 1943, Nos. 16164 and 21250. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A device for converting an impedance A+jB into a pure resistance comprises a length of wave-guide, the characteristic impedance Zo of which is equal to (- kB + #k<2>B<2> + 4(A<2>+B<2>)) /2 where k=1-tan<2>#/tan #. In the prefer red case in which the length chosen is #/8, k =0 and Zo=#A<2>+B<2>. The invention also includes a similar impedance transformer comprising a #8 length of transmission line in which Zo=#A<2>+B<2>. The device may be associated with a #/4 line to convert the pure resistance to a resistance of different value. The invention may be employed for matching a coaxial line to a wave guide as shown in Fig. 4. The complex impedance presented at the point at which the probe 15 enters the wave guide is converted by a #/8 section 16 having a characteristic impedance equal to the modulus of the complex impedance to a pure resistance and this resistance is converted to a resistance of suitable value by a #/4 section 17. By this means, two pieces of wave guide may be connected together at an angle or flexibly by providing a flexible coupling as described in Specification 579,974 between two coaxial lines matched to wave guides in the manner described. Where the matching device is a rectangular wave guide, and energy is to be transmitted in the H1, 0 mode the desired characteristic impedance is derived from the formula Zo=377 / #k-(#o/2a)<2> where a is the longer side of the cross-section and #o is the wavelength in air and k is the dielectric constant of the material of the guide. In case suitable dielectrics are not available, two #/8 sections can be used having characteristic impedances Z1, Z2 such that Alternatively a #/4 section may be used to transform the complex impedance to one that can be converted to a pure resistance by a #/8 section using an available dielectric.
