Abstract

772,631. Waveguide impedance-matching. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 13, 1954 [Dec. 22, 1953], No. 36052/54. Class 40 (8). A waveguide impedance matching system comprises an adjustable capacitative and/or inductive diaphragm 4 so mounted that the effective area of the diaphragm (which determines its reactance) is variable in situ and in addition the diaphragm itself is displaceable in the direction of the axis of the waveguide. The system shown is designed to provide matching between a waveguide 1 and the input or output antenna 2 of a helix 3 forming the slow-wave structure of a travelling-wave tube. The reactance of the diaphragm is varied by rotating it about a thin metallic or ceramic spindle 5 which passes through a slot 6 in the narrow wall of the waveguide. This slot enables the diaphragm to be displaced axially. Resilient metal plates 7, 8 on either side of the slot provide metallic contact between the diaphragm and the waveguide. Alternatively the connection between the diaphragm and the waveguide may be capacitative. The diaphragm may be mounted in a section of the waveguide which is telescopically displaceable along the remainder of the guide. Two diaphragms may be used instead of one, one of them being displaceable.
