Abstract
780,825. Velocity modulated tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH, Inc. June 17, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 17511/55. Class 39(1). A klystron has three resonators mounted on drift tube sections 4, 6, 7, 8, Fig. 1, the resonators 11 and drift tubes forming parts of the tube wall, the resonators 11 being cylinders whose axes are perpendicular to the drift tube axis and tuning plungers 23 at the cavity ends, connected by flexible wall members 26 to the cavity wall, are provided for wide band tuning. There may alternatively be two or more than three resonators. The plungers 23 have #/4 choke flanges 24 and the metal bellows 26 are connected between the tuning plunger 23 and cavity wall 27. The bellows is brazed to wall 27 at 29 and to the plunger 23 at 31. Telescoping sleeves 32, 33 have flanges which are screwed or bolted to 23, 27 and screw 36 is journalled in 34 and connected to tuning knob 37. The resonators are brazed to the drift tubes at 22 and the collect- or has a water jacket 19 ; magnetic focusing coils (not shown) are provided. The device is degassed at a temperature equal to or above 500‹C. while exhausting, the tuning plungers resting against the drift tubes and being held there by a temporary holder 38, Fig. 3 (not shown).
