589,958. Radiolocation ; wireless transmitting and receiving apparatus. COCKCROFT, J. D., and ASHMEAD, J. Aug. 27, 1943, No. 14056. [Class 40 (v)] In a short-wave signalling system, particularly a radiolocation system, employing a waveguide 1 acting directly as an aerial or associated with a reflector 6, a toroidal cavity resonator 7 is connected in shunt with the guide through an aperture in the wall of the guide and acts normally to block transmission, but can be detuned to permit transmission by a switching voltage applied to an electrode 9 associated with an annular gap 7A enclosed in an envelope 8 containing an ionizable gas. In a radiolocation system as described in Specification 582,419, comprising a wave guide having two branches 2, 3 terminating in the focal plane of reflector 6 at equal distances from the focus, resonators are associated with each branch and are excited alternately. The assembly may be used for transmission as well as reception, the energy of the pulses from transmitter 16 being sufficient to ionize' both resonators independently of the switching voltages. In this case, a further resonator 18 is connected in series between guide 1 and receiver 12 to block the receiving branch 17 during transmission. The aperture in the resonator is rectangular with its shorter dimension lying in a crosssection of the toroid. The corresponding aperture in the wall of a rectangular wave guide has its shorter or longer dimension parallel to the length of the guide according as the resonator is fitted to the wider or narrower face of the guide. Iris diaphragms 15 inserted where shown provide matching impedances. Specification 589,023 also is referred to.
