Abstract

565,413. Frequency modulation. BARFORD, N. C. May 5, 1943, No. 7094. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] Frequency modulation of a velocity-modulation discharge tube oscillator is effected by jointly varying the tuning of both resonators when the oscillator includes a pair of resonators ; or by varying the tuning of the single resonator -when the oscillator is of the type in which the electron stream is reflected. In Fig. 1, the resonators 4, 5 are coupled by the connected loops 9, 10 and modulation from a source 17 is applied to vary impedances 13, 14 coupled to the resonators by loops 15, 16. The back coupling 9, 10 may be replaced by a wave guide connecting the two resonators 4, 5 ; and modulation may be effected by adjusting conductors: or dielectric elements within other wave guides communicating'with the resonators through slots, Fig. 3 (not shown). In Fig. 2, the oscillator is of the kind employing a single resonator 4, the electrode 8 acting as a reflector of the electron stream; and modulation is effected by a variable impedance 13. Specification 548,095 is referred to.
