Abstract

860,735. Joint-making packing; stuffing-box substitutes. KLINGER, K. A. June 8, 1959 [June 23, 1958], No. 19598/59. Classes 122 (3) and 122 (5). [Also in Group XXVIII] Sealing means, particularly for use in an articulated pipe joint 13, comprises an outer V-section rubber &c. ring 30 urged against frusta-conical surfaces 20, 21, to be sealed by an inner expandable V-section ring 31 of metal or other rigid material. The inner ring, preferably of stainless steel, is split, as at 41, has lateral flanges 39 to lie against the inner edges 36 of the outer ring and has an apex angle which, in the free condition of the rings, is greater than that of the outer ring. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the rubber ring is formed by a pair of identical frusto-conical rings 44 provided near their outer peripheries with complementary flat surfaces 45, urged apart by an inner metal ring 44a and faced with outer wearing-rings 42, 43 of metal or suitable plastic material, e.g. " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark). Leakage between the faces 45 is prevented by sealing lips 59 and the rings 42, 43 are either bonded to the rubber rings 44 or in interlocking engagement therewith as by ribs and grooves 48, 49.
