857,548. Cables. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 14, 1956], No. 28921/57. Class 36 A high voltage D.C. cable comprises coaxial negative and positive cores 1 and 3 separated by insulation 2 which is sensitive to water, the positive core being surrounded by insulation 4 which is very much less sensitive to water and is substantially waterimpermeable, the whole being enclosed in a non-metallic protective sheath 5 of greater mechanical strength than the insulation 4 but not completely water impermeable. The insulation 2 may comprise p.v.c. or an impregnated fibrous material such as paper, and the insulation 4 may be polythene. The sheathing 5 may be of a vinyl chloride polymer or may be a mixture having a high degree of water impermeability and based on polyisobutylene or butyl rubber having a high carbon black content and may be enclosed in an additional sheath 6 of mechanically stronger material, e.g. p.v.c. An oil retaining layer of metal or plastic foil 7 may be applied over the insulation 2.
