Abstract
938,813. Electric cables. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 11, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 9087/59. Class 36. [Also in Group XXXV] The conductors of oil immersed electrical apparatus are covered by an oil-impregnated insulating covering (paper) having a greater affinity for water than for oil underneath which is a further covering of insulating material which, when impregnated with oil, is substantially impermeable to water and has a melting point in excess of 150‹ C. and a dielectric constant between 3.0 and 3.5. The inner insulating covering may be a three layer half lap wound covering of tape made from polyethylene terephthalate ester, sold as " Melinex " (Registered Trade Mark), 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenyl 2,2-propane polycarbonate, sold as " Makrofol " (Registered Trade Mark) or polyethylene which has been irradiated in excess of 40 megarads. The inner tape covering may be provided with roughened surfaces to facilitate the entry of oil.
