Abstract

1,028,874. Transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 31, 1962], No. 3650/62. Heading H1T. Insulation for electrical apparatus comprises a plurality of wrapped layers or groups of wrapped layers of insulating material spaced from one another by insulating spacers which allow oil to circulate between the layers. As shown in Fig. 1, a transformer assembly 13, which consists of a winding 11 wound on an insulator 12, is rotatably mounted in bearings 16 and 17. A sheet of insulating material 18 is fed from a roller 32 as the assembly is rotated so as to form layers of insulating around the windings 11, each layer 20, 21, 22 being separated from its neighbour by spacer strips 25 and 26. These strips are held in position by radially extending slots 31 in jigs 30 and 33 secured to each end of the assembly. Several alternative spacer shapes are given in Figs. 2-6 (not shown). In alternative methods the spacers are held in position by the material 18 without the use of jigs 30 and 33 or merely glued into, position. The insulation may overlap the ends of the windings a sufficient amount to be " petalled " to form end insulation.
